It is the calming neurotransmitter. So when we must relax we will crave sugar so that we can create more serotonin. This is one of the main reasons sugar is so addictive. Refined sugars are added to many foods to improve the taste. Sugar consumption has increased radically since the 1950’s. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated in 1993 that the average American ate 130 pounds of sugar annually, in 1998 it moved to 147 lbs of sugar, and this number is approximately 170 pounds of sugar annually.

Sugar can be concealed as many diverse names like sucrose, fructose, maltodextrin, maltose, lactose, and high fructose corn syrup. All these are names of processed sugars. If a food you’re buying has some of these names on the tag as the first ingredient, or a combination of these among the first four ingredients, do not buy it! It will lead to blood sugar imbalances over time, and affect your immune system.
High fructose corn syrup was designed in 1966 as a sweetener to combine into processed foods. It’s made of cornstarch and turns into glucose and fructose. This sort of processed fructose is metabolized differently than sugar and can lead to high triglycerides and insulin resistance. Fructose found in whole fruits doesn’t have the adverse impact of processed sugars, and shouldn’t contribute to high blood fats. But we’re becoming more processed fructose as an additive in foods.
Our entire body, especially our mind, uses glucose for energy. Glucose is found in fruits and vegetables, and is used in the metabolism of plants and animals. Yet, overuse of sugar, particularly processed sugars in adults and children causes the adrenals to work harder, putting out more adrenaline than is needed. Concentration is influenced because brain wave activity increases and focusing on a single subject becomes harder. Over time, once the brain cells are stressed too long, symptoms of depression will start to occur. At this stage the entire system becomes overwhelmed, causing symptoms of fatica and indifference, signaling that we want a break. If depression is brought on by excess refined sugar consumption, regardless of what medication is taken, the indicators won’t be alleviated properly.
